A Dynamic Ocean–Atmosphere Model of the Tropical Atlantic Decadal Variability

چکیده

A linear model that couples an ocean mixed layer with a simple dynamic atmosphere is used to study the mechanism for decadal variability over the tropical Atlantic. An unstable mode with a dipole sea surface temperature (SST) pattern similar to observed decadal variability in the tropical Atlantic emerges in the time integration of the model. A wind–evaporation–SST feedback is responsible for the growth and oscillation of the unstable mode whereas the mean state of the Atlantic climate is essential for maintaining the spatially quasistanding dipole structure. The oscillation period ranges from several to a few tens of years and is sensitive to coupling strength. The oscillation is not self-sustainable as the realistic damping rate exceeds the growth rate. In response to white noise forcing, the model produces a red SST spectrum without a peak at finite frequencies. Therefore it is suggested that the tropical dipole’s preferred timescales, if any, arise from the forcing by or interaction with the extratropics. In a model run where the forcing is confined to the extratropics, a dipole SST pattern still dominates the forcing-free Tropics, in support of the proposed linkage between the Tropics and extratropics.

Simulated interannual to decadal variability irk the tropical and sub-tropical North Atlantic

The dominant pattern of tropical and subtropical North Atlantic sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies simulated in the GFDL coupled ocean-atmosphere model is identified and compared to observations. The spatial pattern and temporal variability of that pattern resemble observational results. On interannual time scales it is shown that anomalous surface heat fluxes, consistent with variations i...

Atlantic Climate Variability Experiment Prospectus

Energetic, large-scale variability is observed in the atmosphere and ocean of the Atlantic Sector on interannual and decadal time scales. It is manifested as coherent fluctuations in temperature , rainfall, surface pressure and temperature reaching eastward to central Europe and northern Asia, southward to subtropical West Africa and westward to North and South America with a myriad of well doc...

Eight centuries of north atlantic ocean atmosphere variability

Climate in the tropical North Atlantic is controlled largely by variations in the strength of the trade winds, the position of the Intertropical Convergence Zone, and sea surface temperatures. A high-resolution study of Caribbean sediments provides a subdecadally resolved record of tropical upwelling and trade wind variability spanning the past 825 years. These results confirm the importance of...

A simple coupled model of tropical Atlantic decadal climate variability

[1] A linear, zonally averaged model of the interaction between the tropical Atlantic (TA) atmosphere and ocean is presented. A balance between evaporation and meridional heat advection in the mixed layer determines the sea surface temperature tendency. The atmosphere is a fixeddepth, sub-cloud layer in which the specific humidity anomaly is determined by a steady-state balance between evaporat...

Solar forcing synchronizes decadal North Atlantic climate variability

Quasi-decadal variability in solar irradiance has been suggested to exert a substantial effect on Earth's regional climate. In the North Atlantic sector, the 11-year solar signal has been proposed to project onto a pattern resembling the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), with a lag of a few years due to ocean-atmosphere interactions. The solar/NAO relationship is, however, highly misrepresented...
